I'm so happy to be back on my blogging game after being inspired by friends, family and Chi-City in general. It's been over 6 months since my last post, and even longer since the post before that but I'm baaaaaack!

What I hope to do moving forward is provide random musings from my life and perhaps some inspirational content for whomever decides to read. I had to reflect on the name of the blog...Chica Go Getter to remember why I started it in the first place close to four years ago. I am a GoGetter and I keep a few around me, so this blog is for you, us and them. Beyond that, I'm using this as a tool to keep up with my family who I don't get to see often (shouts out to KY).

Hopefully this will start to take shape and define itself as we go along.

As some of you know, in true Go Getter fashion, last year I became a certified Flirty Girl Fitness Instructor (woo hoo) and also began teaching Hip Hop. Many of you have taken class with me and can vouch for how much fun we have! Starting on July 12th I will be hosting weekly dance classes and would love for you to come check me out! This is the perfect way to learn some new moves, and get your body right and tight for the back-end of summer (no puns intended).

For starters check out this bit, the 15th Annual Chicago Summer Dance Series:

"Each night of the 11-week series offers an introductory one-hour dance lesson by professional instructors followed by two hours of live music and dancing on the 4,900 square-foot, open-air dance floor designed by artist Dan Peterman out of 100% recycled materials. The dance floor, titled Chicago Ground Cover is undergoing an expansion and restoration and will be completely renovated when Chicago SummerDance opens on July 7.

Highlights include a nostalgic evening celebrating Soul Train’s 40th Anniversary on July 23; Locos Por Juana on September 9; and events in conjunction with the Chicago Colombian Music Festival on July 9 and 22, the Latin Street Salsa Congreso on August 17 and 21 and the International American Tango Festival on August 25."

Yes We Did/We Did That

"Yes We Did" and "We Did That" were two of about 20 text messages I received during the wee hours of the morning after it was confirmed that Barack Obama had secured the Presidency of the United States of America!

After the historic evening, Chicago is blazing today... and not just from the unusually warm November temps (I was over-heating in a three-quarter sleeved light jacket). The big Obama WIN has Chicagoans walking around with the biggest grins on their faces! There has also been a rush to grab today's issues of the Sun-Times and the Chicago Tribune which feature President-Elect Obama on the cover and are special commemorative editions. Most places have been running low throughout the day but both news organizations have printed extra copies to match consumer demand. I was fortunate enough to slide into Walgreen's on Michigan and Chicago and grab two copies of each pub (don't worry mama, I will be hand-delivering yours soon). The Walgreen's folks had been concerned about the aggressive folks who were attempting to go all BAMN (by any means necessary) to get the papers, so the clerks decided to house them behind the registers as a security measure.

Today History WILL Be Made

We don't know what we will wake up to tomorrow or who will be the next president, but we're hoping praying, and most importantly, voting for Senator Barack Obama. Today here in Chicago, there will be a HUGE rally in Grant Park that has attracted people from all over the nation and world to our city to take part in history.

We truly encourage you to be part of history too -- go out and vote. There are NO excuses. For those of you who weren't aware, your employer is required , by law, to allow you two hours to go and vote. Given the high-profile nature of today's election you may need the entire two hours. The polls opened in IL less than an hour ago and lines are long. Please be patient! If you have any questions about voting please visit www.BarackObama.com. This site has a healthy amount of info about polling locations and info you need to know to prep you for voting.

Coming off of the success of the Graduation album and the AMAZING Glow in the Dark Tour Mr. West is rumored to be releasing his next masterpiece cleverly (rumored to be) titled Good Ass Job (because what else could come after Graduation) in December 2008.

During the 2008 VMA's Yeezy closed the show debuting his single "Love Lock Down". We're totally hoping the album drops this year....that takes care of our gifting lists for the Holidays.

The Blues Jean Bar is def not a late night haunt frequented by the denim clad Coyote Ugly crowd as the name may suggest. It is actually home to one of the coolest shopping experiences a Chica could have. Basically its a haven for ladies and gents looking for the perfect pair of jeans. The store features a wooden bar decked out with stools where shoppers can sit and "order" pairs of jeans based on wash, cut, brand, size - you name it.

Women of color specifically tend to have issues with expressing their sexuality and sensual side in this fashion...but GET OVER IT CHICAS. Most pole dancing classes are for women only and most people who take the classes aren't professionals and are just looking to try something different. Hop on that pole...no one will think you're a freak or a hoe..I promise! You'll find muscles that you never knew you had!

I was made aware of Celebrity Makeup Artist Akua Auset while working with a past employer on a reality series taped in Chicago last summer. Although I didn't have a chance to speak with her, everyone she came in contact with was amazed by her warm spirit and superior makeup skills (I saw some show-stopping before and afters that day...I repeat..show-stopping). The Cook County sales tax rate is climbing a percentage point, to 9%, that will push Chicago's tax on general merchandise to 10.25% today. Oh SNAP.

As if we weren't already getting beat in the pockets enough with the high HIGH HIIIIGH gas prices, we now have to throw a little more dough on that seemingly affordable "club dress" at Forever 21, if you're shopping at their newest MONSTER size store in the old Virgin Records building on Michigan Ave. Something has to give! According to NBC5, shoppers are saying they will leave Cook County to do major shopping. Schaumburg, here we come?

For less than it costs to get your latte fix ($2!), you can beat the traffic and cruise the river as a part of your daily commute. I took the water taxi from Madison and Canal to Michigan near the Wrigley building on a lovely spring afternoon. What better way to kick back and relax after a long day indoors? Although I'm a huge fan of the DSWs of the world, one cannot always be expected to go to battle for her shoes. If you want to feel pampered, let them come to you at the Nordstrom shoe department. The floor is swarming with sales consultants eager to help you find that special something. Choose a few that you like and let them do the rest. Why eat when you can dine?
An hour lunch away from the office can feel like a spa treatment if you do it right. Meiji at 623 N. Randolph wins the award for best Sushi in the West Loop. (As far as rolls go...I'm not a purist or anything) For the cost of two $5 footlongs at Subway, you can have the Meiji Gunkan - blue crab, masago, and spicy mayo wrapped with tuna and topped with a tempura crunch. Believe me, its worth the extra five bucks. The dining room has an authentic Japanese feel with sleek bamboo furnishings and a modern minimalist design. Named after Japanese Emperor Meiji whose title signified a new period of enlightened rule, I felt exactly that after my Meiji experience.

For those of you who had a chance to experience Looptopia last year, you know that this event is one of a kind.

Nothing Like Good Friends - GoGetter (s) of The Week

Some people are in your life for a season but everyone in your life has a reason.

Last night I had a hour+ long conversation with two of the most dynamic Chicas on the face of the earth. Yes, I'm biased because they are actually two of my closest friends and know me better than almost anyone else, so I guess you can call them my sisters. They're both GoGetters in the sense that they are about their business yet are still down to earth. One is finishing course work towards her PharmD and the other is less than 1.5 years from receiving her JD.

They are clearly different women but are the same, in that they have persistence and strength in the face of adversity, they are spiritually grounded and they understand how to develop and maintain mature sister/girlfriend/adult relationships.

In 2004 someone (I forget who it was) told me that the 5 people who are closest to you are reflections, in some way, of who you are. At that point, I started to truly assess the relationships I'd invested time in, some good some not, and ultimately distanced myself from some of the people who I developed friendships with, but weren't adding anything positive to my life. At the end of that long and somewhat painful process, as they say, the cream rises to the top, and these two ladies were among the people that I truly loved, appreciated and wanted to have a lifelong relationship with.

At any rate, we live in different cities now and keep in touch through phone calls, quick visits, text messages and Facebook (ha), since I am well into my career and they are finishing course work. The nature of our friendship has changed and other people have moved in and out of each of our lives, but those long conversations and quick notes to let each other know we're thinking of one another keep the friendship strong.

With that, meet Mo and Kat, Our ChicaGoGetters of the week. Biased? Slightly. But think of them as a symbol of all the people who are great friends and blessings in your life. Heck, send me your stories about how you and your Chicas roll and we'll post them too! We truly believe that there is nothing like having strong relationships between sisters!

The Chicago Park District invites Chicagoans to discover the benefits of a centuries-old practice during Free Yoga Week, Monday - Sunday, Feb. 4-10 at 18 neighborhood parks throughout the city. The initiative is part of the Park District’s effort to encourage residents to incorporate exercise and other healthy activities into their lifestyles.

The term “yoga” is derived from the Sanskrit word meaning “to unite.” The system of exercises focuses on uniting or harmonizing the mind, body and spirit. Practicing yoga regularly promotes energy enhancement, increased flexibility and muscular toning.

The Chicago Park District currently has yoga classes at various locations plus fitness selections such as circuit training, conditioning, kickboxing, Pilates, yoga and aerobics. Additionally, the Park District offers an affordable alternative to commercial gyms with its 55 citywide fitness centers featuring state-of-the-art equipment.

Dear Senator Obama,

This letter represents a first for me--a public endorsement of a Presidential candidate. I feel driven to let you know why I am writing it. One reason is it may help gather other supporters; another is that this is one of those singular moments that nations ignore at their peril. I will not rehearse the multiple crises facing us, but of one thing I am certain: this opportunity for a national evolution (even revolution) will not come again soon, and I am convinced you are the person to capture it.
May I describe to you my thoughts?
I have admired Senator Clinton for years. Her knowledge always seemed to me exhaustive; her negotiation of politics expert. However I am more compelled by the quality of mind (as far as I can measure it) of a candidate. I cared little for her gender as a source of my admiration, and the little I did care was based on the fact that no liberal woman has ever ruled in America. Only conservative or "new-centrist" ones are allowed into that realm. Nor do I care very much for your race[s]. I would not support you if that was all you had to offer or because it might make me "proud."
In thinking carefully about the strengths of the candidates, I stunned myself when I came to the following conclusion: that in addition to keen intelligence, integrity and a rare authenticity, you exhibit something that has nothing to do with age, experience, race or gender and something I don't see in other candidates. That something is a creative imagination which coupled with brilliance equals wisdom. It is too bad if we associate it only with gray hair and old age. Or if we call searing vision naivete. Or if we believe cunning is insight. Or if we settle for finessing cures tailored for each ravaged tree in the forest while ignoring the poisonous landscape that feeds and surrounds it. Wisdom is a gift; you can't train for it, inherit it, learn it in a class, or earn it in the workplace--that access can foster the acquisition of knowledge, but not wisdom.
When, I wondered, was the last time this country was guided by such a leader? Someone whose moral center was un-embargoed? Someone with courage instead of mere ambition? Someone who truly thinks of his country's citizens as "we," not "they"? Someone who understands what it will take to help America realize the virtues it fancies about itself, what it desperately needs to become in the world?
Our future is ripe, outrageously rich in its possibilities. Yet unleashing the glory of that future will require a difficult labor, and some may be so frightened of its birth they will refuse to abandon their nostalgia for the womb.
There have been a few prescient leaders in our past, but you are the man for this time.

Raheem’s signature style of narrating throughout the album makes you feel more like he’s an old friend than a strange new artist. He does a beautiful job of combining old and new school sound so that even your mama can groove to the album.

Since belting out Lionel Richie’s famed “Sela” at the tender age of three, to performing in her own shows, Nyasha Shani has come a long way in her career. Since culminating her studies at the most prominent creative music University in the country with Honors, Nyasha Shani has returned to her notebook to begin work on her first album. As a songwriter, she has a strong command of the pen; with the ability to captivate real-life situations through genuine emotion and the cleverness of her lyrics.
